Godzilla, een enorme vuurspugende draak, wordt in zijn slaap gestoord door kernproeven die op zijn eiland worden uitgevoerd. Het beest baant zich een weg naar Tokio en richt daar enorme schade aan. De Amerikaanse journalist Steve Martin is toevallig in de buurt en probeert samen met zijn vriend Dr. Daisuke Serizawa een manier te vinden om het monster te vernietigen.
